Internship Summary
The intern will bolster ongoing efforts to support art, events, and interpretation onsite. This includes assisting with summer events, providing tours, and improving and expanding the Historic Poor Farm Interpretation Manual which will facilitate the training of incoming docents and onsite partners and support education about the Historic Poor Farm to members of the public. This internship is funded in conjunction with a Silos and Smokestakes National Heritage Area Internship Grant and support from Johnson County and the Johnson County Historical Society.
Experience Needed
Interest in history and local foods, good communication skills, ability to work with the public, staff and independently, when necessary, proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Some graphic design skills are recommended but not essential. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and work in an office and an outside setting.

Internship Responsibilities
Applicant will work with the Johnson County Historical Society (JCHS) and Johnson County Historic Poor Farm (HPF) staff to fulfill three primary areas of work and related duties as required:
1) Learn the history of the Historic Poor Farm to build upon the current edition of the HPF Interpretive Manual. This manual exists to train docents and provide a central hub for historical information related to the HPF.
2) Support and assist with events held at the HPF. This may entail providing input on events and tour restructuring efforts, working to expand event marketing and outreach, assisting with event set-up and tear-down, and leading event activities. Must be available August 8, 2026.
3) Provide tours of the Historic Poor Farm for members of the public whether individually scheduled groups, open hours, or at public events. Serve as a steward of the property when open to the public, answering visitors’ questions.
Location and Requirements
Internship duties will take place in person and will require moving between the Historic Poor Farm (4811 Melrose Avenue, Iowa City), the Johnson County HHS Building (855 S. Dubuque Street, Iowa City), and the Johnson County Historical Society offices (200 E 9th Street Suite 101, Coralville).
Intern will be required to provide their own transportation to worksites and may be required to travel between multiple locations during a work shift. Intern must have a cell phone. Laptop and workspace will be provided at each location. Weekend and evening availability required as scheduled. Must be currently enrolled in college level courses.
Start Date and Compensation
The intern is required to complete 240 hours of satisfactory work between May 27- August 21. An average of 20 hours per week is anticipated for the 12-week time frame. Compensation for this position is $17.25/hour for 12 weeks of work.
